Joe Biden is edging closer to the White House, according to projections from the Associated Press, having flipped Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona from incumbent President Donald Trump. 

Trump has held Florida, Texas and Ohio but Biden won three states back from the Republican and the races in Nebraska, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia remain tight as votes in a nail-biting U.S. presidential election continue to be counted. 

The battle for control of the Senate – crucial to whoever wins the White House – remains in the balance, with the parties tied at 48-48, one contest heading to a runoff and three yet to be called.

Biden is currently six votes short of the 270 needed to win the election and Trump needs to find 56, three of which the Republican is likely to pick up in Alaska. Pennsylvania (20), North Carolina (15), Nevada (6) and Georgia (16) are in the balance with votes still being counted: If Biden wins at least one of those four states he'll win the election, if Trump wins all four he'll be reelected.

Biden, who has won more votes than any previous candidate for president at over 70 million, said at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon that he now expected to win the presidency, but didn't declare victory.

"I will govern as an American president," the former vice president said. "There will be no red states and blue states when we win. Just the United States of America."
